August 13 - Day 39

Good Evening!

This morning, as planned, we visited the National Museum of Wildlife Art. First of all, the building itself is a work of art. As you can see from the photo, it is constructed of stone and set into the slope so that it looks like it is part of the mountain. It is surrounded by landscaping, featuring natural plants and highlighted with bronze sculptures of big game animals.

Inside were about 2000 pieces of art dating from 2500 b.c. to the present day. I got to see original paintings by artists that I have long admired: George Catlin, Albert Bierstadt, John J. Audubon, Richard Friese, John Clymer, Bob Kuhn, Robert Bateman, Nancy Howe and many, many more.

After the museum, we headed north, returning to Yellowstone via Grand Tetons National Park. Today the sky was crystal clear and the views of the Tetons were incredible! Didn't see any animals today, but we enjoyed the scenery immensely.

We re-entered Yellowstone, drove north to the middle of the park, and then east around Yellowstone Lake. Once again, we were overwhelmed by the beauty of this place! I will let the photos speak for themselves. One the way out of the park, we crossed over Sylvan Pass, the highest point of our trip at elevation 8524', then descended rapidly to the East Entrance.

After leaving Yellowstone, we entered the Shoshone National Forest, and the terrain changed radically. Instead of spruce forests and snow capped mountains, suddenly we were seeing an arid, almost desert-like landscape featuring sandstone cliffs sculpted by wind and rain into all sorts of fantastical shapes. This was pretty much what we saw all the way to Cody, about 100 miles.

One interesting feature of the trip was the Buffalo Bill Dam. The road passes along the top of a high, twisting canyon and through a series of short tunnels cut into the sandstone.

Cody is a pretty busy tourist area. We found the Buffalo Bill Historic Center in the center of town, but since it was quite late, we opted to find a campground and will visit the museums tomorrow.

Hope you enjoy looking at the pix as much as I enjoyed taking them!
