Hello All
Today we reluctantly departed from Chicken -- what a great place, and great people!
We were able to leave via the Boundary Spur Road and the Top of the World Highway, since most of the road damage from flooding has been repaired. I am so glad we were able to drive this route! I truly felt like we were on top of the world.
The ride to the Canadian border was a little nerve-racking at times - hairpin curves, steep grades, soft narrow shoulders and no guard rails! We took it slowly and made it through just fine. Luckily, there wasn't much traffic.
We passed out of Alaska and into the Yukon at about 10:40 a.m., and immediately had to set our clock ahead one hours, since we also passed from Alaska time to Pacific Standard.
Fortunately we had pretty good weather - hazy but sunny. It was quite dusty at times traveling on the gravel roads. The locals told us that it can go from mud to dust in a day, and they were right!
The road was somewhat better on the Canadian side of the border, but more dusty. We had to close the windows and turn on the A/C when it was the worst.
I will post the second part of the trip on the Klondike Loop Highway separately.
Cheryl & Don
