Greetings!
Today we took it a little easier. We left the campground in Eureka, MT at about 10:00 a.m. and started toward Wyoming, where we plan to visit Yellowstone and the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum and the Whitney Gallery of Art.
On the way, we stopped at Hungry Horse to see one of the world's largest concrete dams. From there, we travelled south on Route 83, which parallels the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It was cloudy off and on, but we found some nice spots to stop and take a few pictures.
The terrain has changed drastically since we left Alberta. We went from glacier capped mountains to high, dry plains. This part of Montana is characterized by ranches, clear rocky rivers and streams, rolling sage-covered rangeland, and small towns with lots of new housing developments. The mountains are getting higher as we go south, and the forest is full of huge spruce, tamarack and pine. The timber industry is strong here, and there is some mining activity. There is a tremendous amount of land owned by the state and federal government -- state and national forests, recreation areas, and designated wilderness.
During the course of the day we passed through Stryker, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Hungry Horse, Swan Lake, Condon, Seeley Lake, Ovando, Avon, and ended at a campground in Gamson, which is right on I-90.
We didn't see much wildlife today, but we were driving mostly during the middle of the day, so no surprise. We did see a couple of deer and one sand hill crane.
Tomorrow we will continue toward Wyoming and Yellowstone.
Later!
Cheryl & Don
