July 13 - Day 8

Hello from the Yukon

Here I sit surrounded by all my wildflower field guides (Alaskan Wildflowers, Wildflowers of Denali National Park, Wildflowers of the Yukon, Alaska & Northwestern Canada, and Rocky Mountain Wildflowers), trying to identify the huge variety of new species we have found. Above you will see the first sixteen. I have at least that many more to ID.

Today we traveled through Teslin, Whitehorse, and Haines Junction. We also made a side trip about half-way to Haines, AK to check out a particular landmark. We may cover that road again later in the trip.

In Teslin we crossed the Nisutlin Bay Bridge across part of Teslin Lake, and visited the Marsh Lake Dam Recreation area. We got our first look at the Yukon River. What beautiful green water!

In Whitehorse, we visited the Yukon Transportation Museum. Lots of history about the gold rush and building of the Alcan Highway.

We are spending the night in a campground in Haines Junction in the shadow of the tall, partially snow-covered peaks of the Auriol Range. This place has Wi-Fi, so I am catching up on my posting. It's COLD! Saw a few snowflakes today, and the wind has been blowing hard all day.

Tomorrow we will pass through the last four Yukon towns on the Alcan Highway -- Destruction Bay, Burwash Village, Kluane Wilderness Village and Beaver Creek. We will then cross the Yukon border into Alaska at Port Alcan. Then it's on to Fairbanks and the end of the Alaska Highway.

More soon!
